The 1099-DA lists the proceeds. You still need the basis.
For many 2025 sales, a custodial broker’s Form 1099-DA reports gross proceeds and leaves cost basis blank. Basis reporting for covered securities generally starts with sales on or after January 1, 2026. BasisFix matches bitcoin lots on this machine so you can review a Form 8949 worksheet. Drop a River, Coinbase, Kraken, Cash App, Strike, Swan, or Gemini export and apply fifo, HIFO, or specific identification. Nothing is uploaded. The preview is free. Export unlocks with a license key. Launching at $29 per tax year, one-time, not a subscription.
No account. No upload. The worksheet never signs in to an exchange, a wallet, or a tax agency.
The file is read locally.
Parsing and lot matching use the same Python engine, inside the page. The reconciler does not post the CSV.
There is no account.
BasisFix does not ask you to create a login. A license key, when you type one, is checked on this machine. The dev key processes no payment.
The CSV stays on this computer.
The form at the bottom sends the email you type to BasisFix. If the waitlist store is not configured, the page offers a mailto to [email protected]. The CSV is not part of that message.
Jim keeps BasisFix. He is a long-time bitcoin holder. A fuller bio and a photo are not because they have not been written down.
How it works
Three steps. The missing cost stays missing. BasisFix does not substitute zero.
1. Bring the CSV
Import River Account Activity, River Bitcoin Activity, the older River export, Coinbase, Kraken, Cash App, Strike, Swan, and Gemini. A generic mapper covers other spreadsheets once you name the columns. Drop the file on the worksheet. It stays on this machine.
2. Match the lots
Normalize each row to a buy, sell, transfer, or income event. Pick fifo, HIFO, or specific identification. Carry basis and the original acquisition date when a send and a receive share a transaction id. Flag duplicates, missing basis, and sends that do not meet a receive.
3. Review the worksheet
Short-term and long-term totals, warnings, and ordinary income show up before any download. Interest, mining, and referral payouts are ordinary income at fair market value, and each one starts a new lot. The preview is free.

Each tool runs in this browser. None of them uploads the numbers. The worksheet download is separate, launching at $29 per tax year, one-time, not a subscription.
That price is one-time, not a subscription. The preview is free. A license key unlocks the export. There is no checkout on this page, so the price is stated as launching at $29.
Preview, free.
Short-term gain, long-term gain, warnings, and an income summary for interest, mining, and referral payouts. Ordinary income is not a Form 8949 line.
Export, locked.
The step labeled Export Form 8949 CSV + Schedule D summary stays closed until a license key is accepted on this machine. There is no payment provider. BASISFIX-DEV unlocks every year. BASISFIX-DEV-2024 unlocks 2024 only. Any other key is rejected. No payment is processed.
Every file is for review.
The download is marked review with a tax pro. The command-line tool writes the same worksheets and does not ask for a key.
The worksheet download is $29 per tax year. It sits under the $49 entry tier published by Koinly, CoinLedger, ZenLedger, and TokenTax for about 100 transactions, and under CoinTracker Base at $59.

Figures below were read from public pricing pages on 25 October 2026. Vendors change them. Check the vendor before you rely on a number. This table is not an endorsement. BasisFix is launching at $29.
A narrow comparison. BasisFix does not offer the API sync, TurboTax handoff, or 1099-DA reconciliation those products advertise.

Where the CSV is read
In the browser on this machine. No account.
In their account, after an API connection or a CSV upload.
In their account, after you connect or upload.
What it covers
River, Coinbase, Kraken, Cash App, Strike, Swan, Gemini, and a generic map. Bitcoin-oriented. No DeFi scope.
Many assets and integrations. Homepage also talks about 1099-DA, Form 8949, and TurboTax.
Many assets. Paid plans mention 1099-DA reconciliation.
How you pay
Launching at $29 per tax year. One-time, not a subscription. Free preview. Export unlocked by a license key.
Per tax year, not a renewal. Newbie $49 for 100 transactions. Hodler $99 for 1,000. Trader from $199.
Paid plans auto-renew. Base $59 for 100 transactions this year. One purchase covers prior-year forms.
Before you pay
Free preview. Export locked.
Free preview, including a large import. Report download locked.
A longer set of notes, including ZenLedger, TokenTax, Bitcoin.Tax, Clams, Swan, and River, is in the repository under docs/growth. Those notes are not a rank report.
What this worksheet leaves out
The worksheet is for review.
Short-term rows default to box I and long-term rows default to box L, the 2025 checkboxes for a digital asset with no 1099-DA. You can mark a lot G, H, J, or K when a 1099-DA reported the sale. Filing a return is outside BasisFix.
Some gaps are flagged and then stopped.
Missing USD basis is excluded from the gain total. An unmatched send is left in its account. Wash-sale adjustments and foreign-currency conversion are outside BasisFix.
The sample account is invented.
Names, transaction ids, and amounts in the repository are fictional and exist so the tests have a known answer.

The demo report is the fictional 2024 FIFO slice of the classic samples: short-term 730.50, long-term 5,000.00, net 5,730.50. It uses no file of yours. Guides on Form 8949, exchange CSVs, lot methods, and comparisons are linked from the guide index.
The reconciler reads it in the browser. It does not upload the file. A waitlist email is sent to BasisFix. The CSV is not included.
Can I buy a year for $29?
The launch price is $29 per tax year, one-time, not a subscription. The preview is free, and a license key unlocks the export. There is no checkout on this page yet, so this build does not take payment. A dev key unlocks a download on this machine and processes nothing.
How is this different from Koinly?
Koinly’s published Newbie tier is $49 per tax year for 100 transactions, with a free preview and the file imported to their account. BasisFix previews on your machine, covers a short list of Bitcoin CSVs, and is launching at $29 per tax year, one-time, not a subscription. A free preview itself is something Koinly, CoinLedger, and CoinTracker already offer. CoinTracker’s paid plans auto-renew.
Is the demo a real return?
No. It is the invented classic sample for 2024. Every total on it is labeled review with a tax pro.
Does BasisFix apply wash sales?
No. Section 1091 is written for stock or securities. 2025 Schedule D instructions apply wash sales to digital assets that are also stock or securities, such as tokenized securities. BasisFix computes no wash-sale adjustment for those or for bitcoin. A guide states the 2026 Form 1099-DA box 1i limit.
Which Form 8949 box does a sale get?
With no 1099-DA, short-term is box I and long-term is box L. On the reconciler, mark a lot if a 1099-DA reported basis (G or J) or reported the sale without basis (H or K). The Schedule D summary sends G to line 1b, H to line 2, I to line 3, J to line 8b, K to line 9, and L to line 10.
How to try it
From a checkout of this project, the command-line reconciler:
The browser app is a separate static site. From the webapp directory, install, test, and start the dev server. It prints a localhost address. The public site is https://getbasisfix.com.
cd webapp
npm install
npm test
npm run dev
Notes for a later version
Leave an email if you want a note kept. It is sent to [email protected]. The CSV never goes with it.
