Tax-loss harvesting estimator
review with a tax pro. The loss number does not change when a wash-sale rule might apply.
Economic loss is proceeds minus basis. IRC section 1091 disallows certain losses on stock or securities when a substantially identical position is acquired during the period beginning 30 days before the sale and ending 30 days after. A June 2023 Joint Committee on Taxation pamphlet says digital assets are not expressly in section 1091. The 2025 Schedule D instructions say wash sales generally apply to digital assets that are also stock or securities, such as tokenized securities. The 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions for box 1i say a broker reports wash-sale loss disallowed for a tokenized security treated as a stock or security under section 1091, for the same account and the same CUSIP, and that cross-account reporting is optional.
Plain bitcoin is not that instrument. This worksheet computes no wash-sale adjustment for bitcoin or for a tokenized security. If you mark a tokenized security and a repurchase inside the window, the page flags that section 1091 could disallow the loss. It still does not change the number.
FAQ
Does BasisFix apply a wash sale to bitcoin?
No. It shows the economic loss and computes no wash-sale adjustment.
What about a tokenized security?
Section 1091 can apply to stock or securities. The page can flag the window. It does not reduce the loss, and the worksheet does not apply the disallowance.
Is a gain a harvest?
No. Harvesting here means proceeds are below basis.
