review with a tax pro. Long-term starts the day after the one-year anniversary.
This uses the same date rule as the worksheet. Dates are UTC calendar dates. A sale on the anniversary is short-term. A February 29 acquisition has its anniversary on February 28 of the next year. Acquired 2024-02-29, sold 2025-02-28, is short-term. Sold 2025-03-01, it is long-term.
FAQ
Is the anniversary itself long-term?
No. BasisFix calls the sale long-term only when the sale date is after the one-year anniversary.
What happens to February 29?
The anniversary falls on February 28. That day is still short-term.
Does the worksheet use a different rule?
No. The reconciler uses this same comparison on UTC dates from the CSV.
