Guides
These pages explain the worksheet. They do not file a return. The line you will see repeated is review with a tax pro.
Start here
- A bitcoin-only worksheet on your machine
What the local worksheet is for, and where a free preview already exists elsewhere. - What records to keep
Dates, quantities, dollar amounts, and why a lot id in a JSON file is not proof of timing. - Glossary
Short definitions for the words these guides use, each linked to the longer page. - Compare three methods
Type or paste rows. FIFO, HIFO, and specific identification, with no file upload.
Exchanges
- River CSV to Form 8949
Account Activity and Bitcoin Activity, row by row, including the fictional 2024 sample. - River’s Cost Basis column
What River’s own estimate means, and why BasisFix recomputes instead of reading that column. - Coinbase CSV to a Form 8949 worksheet
Transaction history. Buys, sells, sends, and a Convert row BasisFix skips. - Kraken ledger cost basis
Ledger rows paired by refid. XBT is read as BTC. A spend has no invented proceeds. - Cash App bitcoin taxes
The transactions CSV, a 1099-DA that can omit basis, and sends that never appear on the form. - Strike bitcoin taxes
The monthly statement columns. A send is not a sale. Bill pay spends bitcoin. - Swan CSV exports
The tax file Swan describes, and the two other headers BasisFix accepts only with stated assumptions. - Gemini CSV to a Form 8949 worksheet
Text dates from the ledger. Buys, sells, and transfers. Other coins are skipped. - Generic CSV mapper
Name the columns when the file is not one of the exchange headers above.
Methods and lots
- HIFO and FIFO for bitcoin
Same lots, different year. Neither method invents a cost. - Specific identification for bitcoin
How BasisFix names a lot, and what an over-allocation does. - Pick lots before year-end
Specific identification is a record from the sale, not a January switch to HIFO. - Holding period
Long-term only after the one-year anniversary. A sale on that date is short-term here. - Self-transfers are not sales
A matched move keeps the basis. An unmatched send is not proceeds. - Missing basis and lost lots
Why the worksheet leaves a hole instead of using zero. - Bitcoin interest income
Interest, mining, and referral payouts as ordinary income that open a lot. - Mining and node income
Tagged mining is ordinary income and a new lot. An unlabeled routing fee is not reclassified. - Lightning payments
Paying a merchant can be a disposition. A transfer to yourself is not, when both sides match.
Forms
- How to file Form 8949 for Bitcoin
What one sale row needs, and which 2025 box this worksheet writes. The default is I or L. - Schedule D from this worksheet
Boxes G through L and the 2025 lines they total into. Line 16 is only BasisFix’s net. - Form 1099-DA explained
Proceeds versus basis, which sales the broker rules cover, and what the form leaves out. - The Form 1040 digital-asset question
The return asks a yes or no. BasisFix does not answer it. - Wash sales and bitcoin in 2026
Section 1091, tokenized securities, and what BasisFix refuses to adjust. - Like-kind exchange and bitcoin
Section 1031 is real property after 2017. BasisFix does not defer a bitcoin trade. - Bitcoin gifts and inheritance
No carryover basis and no step-up in BasisFix. A gift receive is not automatic income. - Donating bitcoin
No charitable deduction and no Form 8283. A donation is not booked as a sale at market value. - Lost or stolen bitcoin
No theft deduction and no zero-proceeds sale. The lots stay unresolved. - State bitcoin taxes, in brief
No state rates and no state schedules. The federal-style gain is not a state return.
Comparisons
- BasisFix and Koinly
Entry price, where the file is read, and what Koinly does that BasisFix does not. - BasisFix and CoinTracker
One-time versus a paid plan that auto-renews. No rank claim. - BasisFix and CoinLedger
Hobbyist at $49 next to a $29 local worksheet, including the refund line on their page.
Questions
Are these guides filing instructions?
No. Each page is for review, not a filing. The worksheet it describes is labeled review with a tax pro.
Do the sample numbers apply to a real account?
No. Dollar figures cited from this repository come from invented CSV fixtures. They show how the worksheet behaves. They are not a market price and not a tax result.
